Facebook Usernames.

Ok so how shy is Facebook from being an all you need website. I believe its at its peak. Facebook has just announced the upcoming launch for Usernames. All users will be able to access their accounts with Usernames instead of Emails. On top of that this will give users the ability to customize their Facebook profile URL. Rumors say this could be the beginning of Facebook email. Imaging Facebook using its friendly platform as an email client. And imagine a Facebook desktop IM client, why not?. Imagine the ability to support video. Great!!.

Woahh Facebook, you finally discovered usernames are easier!!. Usernames are nothing new so why didn’t facebook use usernames in the first place. Back in 2004 the launch of Facebook Beta was released on web2.0 for the purpose of communication of “Students”. For Facebook to beat its many competitors like Myspace, Bebo, Xanga and at the time Livejournal, Facebook needed a different approach. Something that wasn’t done since internet security was a major thing. Facebook decided that their program would run on full names. Unlike other social networks. This was way more unsafe for personal information. But if you think about it, could you guess the username of your long lost colleague if you wanted to find him?. The answer is most likely no. Usernames aren’t 100% new on Facebook. We’ve had usernames all along like the one below.

The launch of Usernames will simply be ability to create an alias for the profile id (number in bold). I simply doubt you will have the ability to completely change your ID number. This is not criticism this is just more information. =) I love facebook!!
